BerSungkei aka Iftar (Breaking Fast the Sarawakian Style)

from left: Kenneth , Moi et Willie

So yesterday, my friends and I decided to go for Iftar buffet or the Breaking of Fast or in Sarawak dialect :Sungkei. Why do I call it the Sarawakian Style??? Well, first of all. All three of us (plus Willie's sister: Winnie; that would be 4) We're all Christians and we don't really fasting (at the first place). 2nd, we go out and dine at a local eatery (The Banquet) and there are tons of people from all walks of life. 3rd, regardless of your skin colour or ethnicity; you dine together (Kenneth a Chinese, Moi, Je suis est Bidayuh et Willie is Iban) ..but I have to stress here that I am not campaigning or suddenly become a spokesperson for unity or whatsoever. It would be overlapping because in Sarawak, we never really have issue with ethnicity or religion.Everyone is simply Sarawakian and take the three of us for example... yeah we do converse in English but most of the time, code switching in Bahasa Sarawak dialect and a pinch of Mandarin in between.. :P

For those who do not know what is Iftar and why do the three of us are breaking fast (we didn't even fast actually..tsk tsk..) The Muslims have been fasting for almost a month (Ramadhan; according to Islamic Calendar) now(daytime). So, in the evening they would break their fast (Iftar) with delicious foods, some traditional delicacies and mouthwatering desserts. In Malaysia, especially in Sarawak; it is a common sight/practice to break fast with friends of different background(religions;ethnics). So much so that we never really think of it as an issue to say.Hey...this is my belief, stay out of it or I am not fasting..why bother joining... We never think of it that way.Instead, everyone join in and have fun.

So yesterday, we paid RM48 (perpax) for the buffet. I have to say, not bad ....as there were so many choices and the service was good. So we "Sungkei-ng" happily. Today will be the last day for Fasting (Ramadhan) and tomorrow my Muslim friends will be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri. There will be open houses and a lot of visiting to do. I have received a few invitations and would probably go and visit them(those who are staying nearby). Anyway, Would like to wish my Muslim Friends
