What You Need to Know about Malaysian Time
Yes, Malaysian Time does exist! Despite the fact it should comply with the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), for us here in Malaysia; we have a void of space in between.Whatever is written here does not really require anyone to do any difficult mathematics or formulas in order to master the understanding of Malaysian Time. One might want to know that Malaysian Time has the void of space. How is this Void of Space exist in Malaysian Time? Remember, what I'm writing here is based on the general truth and it does not make me any less Malaysian or me trying to badmouth my fellow Malaysian; not at all. Afterall, sharing is caring. So let me explain:
#1 Malaysian Time means "30 mins extra"
When making an appointment with a Malaysian, you need to know that a true blue Malaysian will need extra 30 minutes from the agreed time. Am I saying my fellow Malaysian are late???No.Not at all, here is when the Void of Space rule is applicable in Malaysian Time. It is pretty normal to wait for 30 minutes if you are Malaysian or if you are waiting for a Malaysian. Why 30 mins? That is the most standardized time frame or cooling period or whatever period you want to call it; 30 mins is the maximum time to be late. More than that, you are considered late. If you set an appointment say 8.30am? If you arrived around 8.45am, you can still be pardoned (well, don't be surprised; the other party might show up later than you..yeah most of the time)
#2 Malaysian Time means "I'm on the way"
I'm on the way means I am not late, I am telling you now to wait for me. Yeah, this is the most typical phrase uttered by a person who observes this most basic rules of Malaysian Time. I'm on the way has a lot of meanings if you really want to extract this simple sentence. It could be that that person is in the building (where you at), it could also mean that that person have just found a spot and parked his/her car after frantically looking for one for the past 25 minutes. Normally, I'm on the way might just mean that the person have just taken his/her shower at home and will be there say...another 30 mins?!! This is the second characteristic of Malaysian Time.
#3 Malaysian Time means "My watch does not follow the TV clock"
This is another common trait of why Malaysian Time is heavily applied by most Malaysians. In Malaysia, we have the 1st two TV channels run by gov agency, RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia). If you really want to know the GMT for Malaysia, this is the only reliable source for that. Any other sources may not be showing you the precise time, it may be 25 secs early or later than that. Ok, my point is, as the country progresses and we have a lot of other TV Channels; most Malaysian would have what they call...the AXN time, the Starworld time ..so on and so forth. In the end, everyone has different time zone say a mere difference of 5 mins?! Now, how this 5 mins differences can lead to a major Void of Space in Malaysian Time? This is how it happens. When you have a watch which runs 5 mins early than the GMT/RTM time..you tend to appease yourself in believing that you are gifted with a surplus of time. When in reality.... what is clocked in by your watch does not reflect your attitude of how you should appreciate the 5 mins extra. So....my fellow Malaysians will tend to dawdle... Truth hurts..I know...
Where can you witness/experience Malaysian Time?(some are applied meticulously)
#1 Try Going to the any Bank in Malaysia and wait for your turn. The motto "we will serve you shortly" means... Malaysian Time X 3= ......figure that out Einstein
#2 Fly with any airlines in Malaysia and you will hear this announcement. "We will be landing shortly"...that is a good 30 mins.
#3 Go to any offices in Malaysia and try to set an appointment after lunch hour. You might be told to come at 2pm but the officer in charge will only be in around say. 2.15pm?it's ok..Malaysian Time
#4 Again try going to any offices in Malaysia say 12 noon (lunch hour starts from 12.30-2.00pm). The kind lady at the counter will say, please come at 2.00pm.It's lunch time. Now this is the only time when Malaysian Time fast tracked and defies the theory of Void of Space.
Moral of the story?
There is no moral of the story here. I am just writing this to share my humble thoughts about Malaysian Time. I love Malaysia so much that I somehow becoming very observant of my fellow Malaysians.
